Ornamental Cherry Bud Vase (2014)
The wood for this 5" wide by 7" tall bud vase was harvested from the limb of an ornamental cherry tree. Hollowed from both ends to lighten the vase. The limb was stored outside for a year before being turned. The dark streaks and white flecks on the side are called spalting and are caused by bacteria and fungi that colonized the wood while it was stored. When the wood was brought into the shop and turned, the decay process was arrested and the natural beauty of the spalted wood was exposed.
